Cost Effective Energy Saving Technology for Homes & Commercial Spaces
Cost Effective Energy Saving Technology for Homes & Commercial Spaces

If you are considering energy saving technology for your home or commercial space without breaking the bank, you should consider a professionally installed window film. Window film innovation has taken major leaps in recent years and the film installed on home or commercial windows has little in common with the basic window tint you might find on a car. For one thing, you can achieve very high levels of performance with professional window films while barely being able to detect that they are installed on the glass. In addition, these films can be retrofitted to nearly any existing window to improve the performance of that unit in a more cost effective way than window replacement.

A recent article at Builder Online even noted that: “Energy Commission creates a “loading order” that ranks products on energy efficiency by cost effectiveness. Window film is near the top of those products, beating even blown in ceiling insulation.”

So, with that in mind, we wanted to provide you with a couple of facts about window film and how it can improve nearly any home or commercial space.

FIVE FAST WINDOW FILM FACTS

Cut Cooling Costs By Up To 50% - According to the EPA Energy Star Buildings Manual in the United States, approximately half of a home’s utility bills are wasted by loss of heat and heat gain through untreated windows. Window films can significantly improve energy efficiency. With a thin, virtually invisible addition to existing windows, window films can help you save up to 50% on cooling costs.

Reduce Hot Spots and Cut Irritating Glare - Open your blinds, shades, or draperies and let the sunlight in. In addition to blocking heat, window film reduces glare by up to 87%, making it easier for you to watch television or work on a computer in comfort. Because window films are made with ultra-clear, distortion-free materials, you won’t even know it’s there.

Lessen the Detrimental Effects of UV Exposure - Most fabrics, furnishings and artwork can fade simply by allowing daylight to pass through an untreated window. Most window films will block up to 99.9% of all UVA and UVB rays, helping to protect the occupants of the space while also preserving the color of furnishings, fabrics and carpets.

Corrects Temperature Imbalances Across a Space - Window films can help eliminate hot and cold spots within a space by using film that reduces heat gain coming through the glass in hot areas. This will create a more balanced temperature across the space and reduce the load on the air conditioning system.

Cost Effective Alternative to Window Replacement - While damaged or deteriorating windows simply have to be replaced, window film provides an affordable alternative to replacement when your goal is to improve energy efficiency on otherwise sound windows. In fact, the cost for quick, professional installation is about one-tenth the cost of replacement windows!

With so many people showing an interest in improving the energy efficiency and facility operations of their spaces, we thought you might find this article interesting. This article was posted in FacilitiesNet about the three ways that window film can improve facility operations. To summarize, the three ways are as follows:

Reduces Energy Costs: When window film is installed, the stress on the HVAC system is greatly reduced. Film keeps the cool air inside during summer months and limits heat loss during the winter months. These benefits can ultimately result in lower utility bills for facility managers.

Improves Safety Measures: Windows and doors are any building’s main point of entry, even for those who are uninvited. Safety window films can help reduce property loss and damage in the event of a burglary attempt by making it far more difficult for criminals to penetrate the building through glass doors and windows. Also, in the unlikely and unfortunate event of a natural disaster or extreme weather event, safety and security window film will help minimize damage to property and occupants.

Increases Productivity for Occupants and Preserve Furnishings: Window film lets in natural daylight, but blocks 99% of the sun’s damaging ultraviolet rays, and up to 82% of the sun’s heat. Sun beaming in through the windows can be harmful to the building’s occupants and damage the furnishings. Window film can solve these problems, making it easier for employees to get their jobs done comfortably while protecting their skin and the interior furnishings.

As a way to honor May as being Skin Cancer Awareness Month, we wanted to share this important sun safety information with you. Did you know that you can be exposed to skin damaging UV rays even when you are indoors at home or work? It’s true. In fact in a recent article published by The Skin Cancer Foundation entitled “Sneaky Ways You’re Being Exposed to the Sun’s UV Rays”, they state;

“…you may think you’re safe from the sun’s rays while you’re on the clock. Not so fast: Do you work near a window? If so, UVA rays are coming to work with you. UVB rays, the primary sunburn ray, are largely blocked by glass; but more than 50 percent of UVA rays, the main cause of premature skin aging, can penetrate glass. (Both UVA and UVB rays contribute to the development of skin cancer.) If you’re anywhere within several feet of the window, the rays will reach you.”

That is one of the reasons The Skin Cancer Foundation recommends window tint as part of a comprehensive skin care. In their article “Why Use Window Film?”, they say “Ultraviolet radiation can travel through car and home windows, where it can contribute to the daily accumulation of sun exposure that can lead to skin cancer and photoaging. UV-blocking films can not only protect you against this exposure, but can offer other benefits as well.”

We hope that this article and Skin Cancer Awareness Month encourage you to look into things you can be doing every day to practice sun safety.
